CDFI Awards LEDC $750K Grant for Micro-Loans
Alcura, Inc.The Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund) has awarded to the Latino Economic Development Corporation a grant of $750,000 to support its Micro-Loan Program that provides micro-loans to start-ups and existing businesses in the Washington metropolitan area that have difficulty obtaining credit from mainstream financial institutions.

This award represents the largest grant ever received by LEDC through the CDFI Fund, which promotes access to capital and local economic growth in urban and rural low-income communities across the nation. LEDC is one of four organizations in the District of Columbia to receive the award.

“At at time when small businesses across the region are still facing serious difficulties accessing capital to stay viable and create new employment, this award allows the Latino Economic Development Corporation to play a critical role in helping disadvantaged businesses during this persistent economic downturn,” said LEDC Executive Director Manny Hidalgo.

Tenants Share Priorities with Public Officials

Tesfaye LenchoApproximately 175 tenants from across the city attended the 3rd Annual Citywide Tenant Town Hall on July 31st at the First Trinity Church.

The town hall, which was attended by councilmembers and directors of key DC housing agencies, gave tenants the opportunity to celebrate the successes of their advocacy while creating a dynamic forum for their work to hold public officials and policymakers accountable to their new commitments to ensure quality, affordable housing in the District.

Public officials expressed their support for the Housing Production Trust Fund and rent control, and the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) agreed to host an Open House for tenants on September 28th in response to tenant priorities requesting quarterly stakeholder meetings between DCRA and tenants.
